PLANNED THEMES
This tasting would explore several distinctive Blanton’s releases: Original Single Barrel, Gold Edition, Straight From the Barrel, and a Takara Japanese-import expression. Tasting them side by side would highlight differences in proof, richness, barrel character, and finish while showing how one celebrated bourbon changes across domestic and international releases.
This tasting would compare Buffalo Trace’s two primary rye-bourbon recipes. Mash Bill No. 1 expressions, such as Eagle Rare and Colonel E.H. Taylor, generally emphasize caramel, vanilla, and softer spice. Mash Bill No. 2 bottles—including Blanton’s, Elmer T. Lee, Rock Hill Farms, and Hancock’s President’s Reserve—typically offer more rye spice, herbal character, and a drier finish.
This flight would compare sweet-mash bourbons from Wilderness Trail and Peerless with traditional sour-mash expressions from Colonel E.H. Taylor and Michter’s. The tasting would explore whether sweet mash produces a cleaner, more grain-forward profile while sour mash contributes deeper fermentation character, consistency, and oak integration.
This tasting would follow a progression of wheated bourbons from Weller Special Reserve through Weller Single Barrel, Weller Antique 107, and several higher-proof Maker’s Mark releases. By keeping the bourbon style relatively consistent, the flight would demonstrate how increasing proof changes aroma, texture, sweetness, spice, and finish—with a few drops of water added to the strongest pours.
This tasting would compare two different approaches to cigar-blend bourbon. Joseph Magnus uses Armagnac, sherry, and cognac casks to create a rich profile of fig, prune, toffee, leather, and baking spice. Barrell combines bourbons aged 7 to 18 years and finishes them in Madeira, Armagnac, rum, and Hungarian oak casks, producing brighter spice, molasses, dark fruit, and pronounced oak. The flight would highlight the deeper brandy-driven richness of Joseph Magnus against Barrell’s broader combination of finishing influences.
This tasting would begin with an unfinished straight bourbon before moving into double-oaked and wine-cask-finished expressions. Bottles such as Bib & Tucker Double Char, Peerless Double Oak, Hooker’s House Pinot Noir Finish, and Ampersand Optimus would demonstrate how secondary maturation can add toasted oak, fruit, sweetness, tannin, and additional complexity to the original bourbon.
FAVORITE SOURCES
These are some of my favorite places to look for interesting releases, hard-to-find bottles, private selections, bundles, and auction opportunities. Inventory changes frequently, so it pays to check new arrivals often.
New arrivals, bottles coming soon, back-in-stock releases, exclusive barrel selections, and spirits auctions.
New whiskey arrivals, limited releases, and multi-bottle packages that sometimes include sought-after bottles.
A broad selection of bourbon, rye, Scotch, limited releases, and specially assembled bottle collections.
Convenient for checking local inventory, arranging store pickup, and watching for retailer barrel picks.
A Sonoma County favorite with a strong bourbon selection, occasional barrel selections, online ordering, and local pickup.
A large selection that can be browsed by mash bill, finish, price, proof, limited release, or nearby-store availability.
A useful source for new arrivals, allocated bottles, limited releases, and occasional multi-bottle packages.
A broad spirits inventory that includes familiar bourbons as well as bottles that can be difficult to find elsewhere.
Especially good for craft whiskey, new releases, private selections, emerging distilleries, and limited distribution.
An independent retailer with an extensive bourbon selection, allocated releases, barrel-proof expressions, and store picks.
A whiskey-focused favorite offering private barrel selections, new arrivals, tasting specials, limited releases, and mystery boxes.
Bundles: An allocated bottle may be paired with companion bottles. Compare the complete package price with the normal retail value of every bottle included.
Auctions: Review the buyer’s premium, taxes, pickup or shipping requirements, and total cost before bidding.
Selection, pricing, and shipping eligibility vary by retailer and destination. Purchases are handled entirely by the individual retailer. You must be 21 or older to purchase alcoholic beverages.
OUR GROUP
The Sonoma Bourbon Imbibers is a small, invitation-only circle of enthusiasts in Sonoma County devoted to the deliberate study and enjoyment of American whiskey. Sessions are organized around a single theme so that participants may compare expressions side by side rather than sample them in isolation. Earlier gatherings examined the so-called “Kentucky myth”—the historical and marketing claims that surround bourbon’s origin and identity—together with introductory flights that distinguished traditional rye-forward mash bills from other grain combinations. The most recent meetings have concentrated on wheated bourbons, examining how the substitution of wheat for rye produces a softer, bread-like sweetness and a different aging trajectory.
Tastings draw directly from a privately curated collection of nearly 180 bottles. Each pour is accompanied by structured observation: color, nose, proof, finish, and a simple rating scale that records both technical features and personal preference. Because several members already possess a well-developed wine palate, the group pays particular attention to the subtler distinctions of bourbon—grain character, oak integration, and the effects of barrel entry proof—that can be easy to overlook after years of evaluating vineyard-driven wines.
